THE “HOLY GHOST BARTENDER”

Hello folks.  It has been quite a while since I last posted anything on this particular blog.  But today I want to share another video with you.

Actually, this video is from a pastor who is exposing some of the antics of a popular Charismatic preacher named Rodney Howard-Browne, who calls himself the “Holy Ghost Bartender.”  This name is a reference to the experience of “getting drunk in the spirit,” which is a common theme in some Charismatic circles.  Browne tells the congregation that “The bar is open – y’all here to take a drink!”

“Getting drunk in the spirit” is usually an experience where someone is flopping around (like a drunk person), seemingly unbalanced as he is dancing and/or singing in the congregation, laughing hysterically, or making animal noises.

In this particular video, you’ll see church members doing silly dances, “speaking in tongues,” clucking like a chicken while wildly running around the church, uncontrolled (fake) laughter, rolling around in the aisles, etc., etc.  And all of this behavior seems to be “contagious,” as many in the congregation follow suit.  Such pastors claim that the Holy Spirit is at work here, but this is far from the Spirit of God (1 Corinthians 14:32-33).  It’s simply a game that almost everyone in the church is playing – they go along with the preacher’s nonsense, lest they be accused of “not having the Holy Spirit.”

Interestingly, Browne is endorsed by Joel Osteen, the pastor of the largest church in the U.S. (in Houston, Texas), giving Browne credibility in the mainstream Charismatic churches.  Often times, there also seems to be little or no preaching of the Word of God in these services, but instead, only Charismatic theatrics.

I am not trying to be unkind, but truth has to prevail.  When I first got saved, I also rubbed elbows in the Charismatic circles, but I could not deny that the antics and attitudes within these groups just seemed to contradict the Scriptures.  When I finally dealt with this truth, I was free to understand the blasphemy of such a “spiritual bartender” environment.  I came to understand that the great majority of these people were simply trying to be noticed by others by putting on show of spirituality.  They were being a stumbling block to true Christianity – and I was guilty of the same thing.  Let us pray for these folks that God would open their eyes and heal their hearts.
